Gray's Lone Ranger - Good Hunt Saturday

10/20/2012

Ranger showed why he is not for sale. He showed me the meat despite the squirrels not moving and it being windy. I made the right call taking his nose power out today because he was winding layups. Hunted 3 hours. 10 trees. 2 were dens, Saw 6 gray squirrels - Got 5. Saw one red squirrel and got it. Technically a Virginia limit!

I am glad I went higher up in elevation in the mountains to hunt because the leaves falling is much more advanced up there.

Gray's Prairie Daisy has 8 pups!

Daisy has given birth to 8 pups out of Gray's John Colter! The litter was whelped on May 24th. There are 6 females and 2 males. At this time, all pups are spoken for and will be headed to their new homes in a couple months. So far everyone is doing great! There are many white pups that will likely end up with light brown spots and one tan male. There is a black and white female and a tri-colored female. We are looking forward to seeing this litter develop into the next generation of squirrel dogs!!!

Updated pics of Gray's John Colter

A couple folks have asked us to post updated pics of John Colter. He is out of SGRSQCH Harris' Thunder Buzz x GRSQCH Harris' Goodtime Ginger. This young dog is becoming a good squirrel dog by leaps and bounds. Handles like a dream and is very personable. Built to do the job. He is expected to cross VERY well on our female, Gray's Prairie Daisy. Daisy is out of Gray's Trigger x SQCH CH Kentucky Jody.

WTDA VA State Hunt - Bench Show

Jess handled Daisy in the Bench Show at the WTDA VA State Hunt this past weekend. Daisy won BEST OF CLASS toward her Bench Champion Title in the World Tree Dog Association. Not too bad for Jess' first time handling a dog in a show. She will be hitting the timber with a dog for the Squirrel Hunt in no time!

Gray's Annie Oakley on a hunt in Mississippi

FROM Bud who live in Tennessee -

"Got to go to Mississippi last week with my 9 year old son and our Feist. There was so much water in the woods, I expected the squirrels to have webbed feet. We had a great time and he got his first fox squirrel, shot out all by himself and treed by his feist (Annie),,,, I mean to say he was one proud boy and I was one proud daddy. What a time, the Lord is Good."

Annie is the little dog with the brown head in back! We gave her to this young man about a year ago to get him into squirrel dogs. Looks like it had the desired effect! Gray's Annie Oakley is out of GRSQCH Banjo Joe's Squirt x Gray's Prairie Daisy.

Gettin' the word out about this line!

Gray's Mountain Feist showing promise in blood trailing big game!

I am asked from time to time whether this line of dogs is good for a whole variety of tasks. From herding livestock to being coyote decoy dogs to being good house dogs, I hear it all! I often get questions from hunters about the different things they might be able to do with a Mountain Feist. I usually start out by saying they are a versatile breed of dog and then describe all the things I do with my dogs.

Depending on the part of the country where you are, people have different hunting styles and preferences for jobs given to their dogs. An activity legal in one area might not be legal in the next so my advice in that regard is to check with wildlife law enforcement personnel before getting into an activity.

Using a dog for blood trailing is a topic I am running into more and more. Many breeds of dog have been used to track and locate wounded big game, several types of dog similar in many ways to the Mountain Feist. Well, last year one of our new pup owners decided to test the versatility of a Gray's Mountain Feist by training for squirrel hunting AND blood trailing. Recently, on the Gray's Feist Forum, Phil gave us an update on his male - Phil's Texas Bandit (aka Tex).

From Phil:

"We just got back from Texas. Unfortunately the hunting was slow and I did not get a pig or Javelina. Didn't have any good bloodtrails to put Tex on, but my buddy did hit a pig that didn't leave blood to start out. I put Tex on the track and he took off through the brush. He followed the trail about 75 yards and we found the nock end of the arrow. We followed the trail another 100 yards or so. I know he was on the right trail because we found tracks and some small blood smears on the brush. We determined that the hit was high on the shoulder and non-lethal. Even though we didn't find the pig I think Tex did an outstanding job following a minimal trail, particularly since it was the first real blood trail he had been on and was his first exposure to pigs. "

Hunting is about sharing experiences with family, friends and good dogs!!!

On the game path!

Pals in and out of the field.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK PHIL!!!
